Where are the long-awaited AirPods 3, anyway? We expected them to appear alongside the iPhone 13 in September, but there was no mention of an upgrade. According to industry experts, they may still launch before the end of 2021. That’s according to information obtained by DigiTimes (via MacRumors), and considering how long we’ve been waiting for the AirPods 3, it seems likely that Apple is indeed planning to introduce them before year’s end.
AirPods have endured a lot of criticism over the years. The second-generation AirPods were introduced to the world in March 2019, which according to our calculations makes the third-generation earbuds overdue now that the worldwide epidemic has halted production plans.
Production may be well underway.
We first heard the AirPods 3 were in production a few weeks ago, which is exciting news for any fans of Apple’s wireless headphones. Improved audio quality will be a must, according to rumors. Longer battery life and better bass response have also been mentioned as incentives for buyers to upgrade.
It’s plausible that we’ll see the AirPods 3 wireless earbuds at the same time as new MacBook Pros before 2021 becomes 2022, but Apple may just opt for a simple press release. We’ll let you know as soon as it happens.
It’s not clear when Apple will release its AirPods.
Apple AirPods have been on the market for less than two years, yet they’ve already become a major success: not only has Apple sold hundreds of thousands of them, but practically every other phone maker on the planet has launched its own wireless earbuds as well.
While two-and-a-half years may seem like a long time to wait for a technology upgrade, Apple is in no rush, and it doesn’t need to be.
The second-generation AirPods continue to perform flawlessly at what they were intended to do, so there are no compelling reasons to upgrade them.
Since the release of the AirPods 2, Apple has introduced the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, so it’s not as if the company has been completely silent when it comes to releasing new and improved headphones for its millions of devoted customers.
We’ll have to wait and see what improvements the AirPods 3 offers in terms of enhanced features and audio quality, but Apple can sleep well knowing that no matter what upgrade cycle timings it chooses, it will still move a massive number of wireless earbuds.
